Listen to Music Together Long Distance: 10 Ways That Work

To listen to music together long distance, use something that syncs playback instead of pressing play at the same time. Spotify Jam and Apple Music SharePlay work if you both subscribe. Hangout is free for both of you. Stationhead syncs a Spotify listener with an Apple Music one. Spotify Blend and a shared playlist cover the hours between calls.
Everyone tries the same thing first. You count down on the call, you both press play, and for one verse it’s perfect. Then one phone buffers, or one of you gets an ad, and you’re half a bar apart for the rest of the song, which is somehow worse than not listening together at all. The fix is a tool that keeps both phones on the same second, so a skip on your end is a skip on theirs.
Here is how to listen to music together long distance, with ten tools that do it, all checked in September 2026. They’re sorted by the one thing that actually decides which you can use, and it isn’t features. It’s who has to pay.
The question that decides it: who pays for what
Most of the official “listen together” features were built for friends in the same room, and they get stricter the moment you’re apart. Spotify will let a free account join a Jam in person, and not remotely. Apple needs each of you to have access to the song. Discord needs Premium on both ends. So before you pick an app, answer two questions: do you both pay for a music service, and is it the same one? The rest of this page is sorted by the answer.
If you both pay for the same service
Spotify Jam: best if you’re both on Premium. One of you starts a Jam and sends the link, and you share a single queue: both of you can add songs, reorder them and skip, and playback stays in step on both phones. The catch that most lists get wrong is the important one for you. To listen to Spotify together long distance, you bothneed Premium. Spotify’s own help page says a free account can join a Jam in person and needs Premium to join remotely.
Apple Music SharePlay: best if you’re both on iPhones and already on FaceTime. Start the call, open Music, press play, and choose SharePlay; the song plays in sync with shared controls while you keep talking. Each of you needs access to the music, which in practice means each of you has Apple Music, and not every track supports it.
Discord Listen Along: best if Discord is already where you talk. Link Spotify to Discord, click your partner’s name while they’re playing something, and choose Listen Along. Both of you need Spotify Premium, it works properly on desktop rather than phones, and it runs in text chat rather than a voice channel, so treat it as the laptop option.
If one of you is on Spotify and the other on Apple Music
Stationhead: best for a mixed household. It doesn’t host any music itself; each of you links your own Spotify Premium or Apple Music account, one of you hosts a station, and the songs play in sync for both of you whichever service each is on. Joining is free, and you each still need your own subscription. On Android it only links Spotify; on iPhone and the web it links both.

These are the apps to listen to music together when a subscription isn’t happening, and for couples in two countries they’re often the ones that actually work.
Hangout: best overall if you want free and legal. Made by the people behind Turntable, it streams licensed music itself, so neither of you needs Spotify Premium to listen. You open a room, take turns as the DJ, and everyone hears the same song at the same moment; you can pull in playlists from Spotify or Apple Music to queue from. Keep the room private for two.
Listen Together: best for no sign-up at all. A free web app: create a private room, send the link, build a shared queue and chat, with playback synced from YouTube. It runs in a browser tab on both phones.
GroupTube: best for a shared player with nothing to install. When either of you plays, pauses or skips, it happens for both. Also YouTube-based and free.
Watch2Gether: best if you want the video too. A free sync room for YouTube, Vimeo and SoundCloud, no account needed. It’s the same tool we recommend for watching movies together long distance, and it’s just as good for a live set or a concert film.
For the hours between calls
Syncing playback is for when you’re both free at once. To share music with a long distance partner across time zones, you want something that waits.
Spotify Blend: best for finding out what the other one has been listening to. You invite your partner, and Spotify builds one playlist from both your tastes, updates it every day, marks who each song came from and gives you a taste-match score to argue about. It works on free accounts as well as Premium, which makes it the one Spotify feature here that doesn’t need you both to pay.
An Apple Music collaborative playlist: best for a playlist you build on purpose. Open a playlist, tap the collaborate icon, send the link, and you can both add, remove and reorder songs and react to each other’s with an emoji. One song a day each, and by the next visit it’s the soundtrack of the months apart.
What’s gone, and one honest caveat
JQBX, which older lists still put first, has shut down: its site is an empty placeholder and the app no longer loads. Spotify’s earlier Group Session became Jam. Group-listening features get renamed, moved behind a paywall or quietly dropped more often than almost anything else in these apps, so check the one you’ve picked before you plan an evening around it.
Making it more than background music
The tool is the easy part. What makes it a date is a rule: one album start to finish with no skipping, or one song each in turns where you have to say why you chose it. That second one does more than it sounds like, because a song is how a lot of people say the thing they can’t say directly. For the things that still don’t get said, that’s what melt is for: you each answer privately, and only what you both said yes to is revealed. For a whole evening around the music, our virtual date ideas for couples and long distance relationship ideas have the rest, and when you’d rather play than listen, our free online games for long distance couples all run in a browser tab. Start with one song tonight. Let them pick it.

Frequently asked questions
How can we listen to music together long distance?+
Use a tool that syncs playback rather than pressing play at the same time, which drifts within a verse. If you both pay for the same service, Spotify Jam or Apple Music SharePlay over FaceTime keep you in step. If you're on different services, Stationhead syncs a Spotify listener with an Apple Music one. If neither of you pays, Hangout, Listen Together and GroupTube are free.
Can you listen to Spotify together long distance for free?+
Not in real time. Spotify's help page says Premium is needed to start a Jam and to join one remotely; a free account can only join a Jam in person. What does work on free accounts is Spotify Blend, a shared playlist built from both your tastes that updates every day. For free real-time listening, use Hangout or a YouTube-based room like Listen Together.
Do we both need a subscription to listen together?+
For the official features, yes. A remote Spotify Jam needs Premium on both accounts, Apple Music SharePlay needs each of you to have access to the song, Discord Listen Along needs Spotify Premium on both ends, and Stationhead needs each of you to link your own paid account. The free options are Hangout, which streams licensed music itself, and YouTube-based rooms such as Listen Together, GroupTube and Watch2Gether.
What is the best free app to listen to music together?+
Hangout is the strongest free option: it streams licensed music itself, so neither of you needs a paid Spotify or Apple Music account, and you take turns queueing songs in a private room. Listen Together and GroupTube are free browser rooms that sync YouTube playback with no sign-up, and Watch2Gether does the same with the video on screen.
Can a Spotify user and an Apple Music user listen together?+
Yes, with Stationhead. Each of you links your own account, Spotify Premium or Apple Music, one of you hosts a station, and the songs play in sync for both whichever service each is using. On Android it links Spotify only; on iPhone and the web it links both. Hangout also works, since it doesn't depend on either service to play the music.
