Games to Play Over the Phone Long Distance (Voice Call Only)

The best games to play over the phone long distance work on a plain voice call. Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes was built for it: one of you sees the bomb, the other reads a free manual. Wavelength and Codenames Duet run on spoken clues, Lovebae gives you cards to read aloud, and melt keeps going after the call ends.
There’s a particular kind of call every long-distance couple knows. You both wanted to talk, you’ve done the day, and now there’s a silence that isn’t bad exactly, but neither of you wants to be the one who says “okay, I should go.” Most lists of long-distance games assume a laptop and a video call. This one assumes a phone against your ear and nothing else. If even a call is hard to line up, our games to play over text long distance need nothing but the thread.
So the rule for every entry: it has to work with two voices and, at most, one person looking at a screen. That rules out the drawing games, the shared-screen party packs and anything where you both need to see the same thing, and it leaves the games where the talking isthe mechanic. All ten are real and checked in September 2026, and each says what happens to it on a bad connection, because that’s the thing that actually ends a call. If you do have a screen you can both use, our free online games for long distance couples are the other list.
The one game that was built for a phone call
Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes: best for the night you want a real game, not a conversation prompt. One of you has a bomb on their phone; the other has the defusal manual, which is a free website, and is not allowed to see the bomb. The defuser describes what’s in front of them, the expert flips through the manual and talks them through it, and the timer does the rest. Only one phone shows the game, which is exactly why it’s the classic for couples apart; the app is paid (iOS and Android), the manual costs nothing. On a bad connection it holds up better than you’d think, because the whole game is one person reading slowly and the other listening.
Games where a spoken clue is the whole move
Wavelength: best for finding out how well you read each other. One of you sees a spectrum with a hidden target on it, say “overrated” to “underrated,” and gives a single clue; the other just says a number. The guesser never needs to look at anything. The browser version runs remotely for two to twelve with no sign-up, and the official app is free with no ads. Lag doesn’t matter; there’s nothing timed.
Codenames Duet: best for arguing about how your partner’s brain works. Both of you open the same free room and see the same grid of words, but each holds a key card the other can’t see; every move is one spoken word and a number. It needs two screens, but the screens never have to be in sync, so it’s fine over a call that drops now and then.
Enchambered: Alone Together: best for a free escape room in about thirty-five minutes. Two links, two different screens; most of the clues on yours belong to the puzzle on theirs, so the only way through is to describe what you see and listen. Made for exactly this, by an escape-room company. Text is small on a phone, so it’s better if at least one of you has a laptop. Its paid sequel, Together at Heart, is ten dollars on a pay-what-you-want basis.
Templio: best for a series you can come back to. The same idea as a set of riddles: each of you sees half, neither half is enough, and you piece it together out loud. The first three riddles of each series are free; the full ten-level series is nine dollars, once. Nothing is timed, so a bad line costs you patience, not the game.
Want to know what your partner secretly wants?
play melt with your partner →Cards you read out loud
Couple games to play over the phone are mostly this: one of you holds the deck, the other doesn’t need to see it. These are the decks.
Lovebae: best for truth or dare and never have I ever without buying anything. Over 2,800 cards with intensity levels, free, no sign-up, and built with long distance in mind, so the dares are things you can actually do from separate cities. One of you reads, the other answers, then you swap the phone role.
Our long distance questions deck: best for the call that’s gone quiet. A free generator of questions written for couples apart, from “what did you eat today, rate it” to the ones that take the rest of the call. Tap for the next one, read it out, and don’t answer first. The full list lives in our long distance relationship questions.
Sporcle Party: best for the competitive couple. A free trivia app made for playing together in person or apart; one of you can also just open any Sporcle quiz and read it out while the other shouts answers, which is the low-tech version and honestly the better one on a bad connection.
The ones with nothing to open
Games to play on call with your boyfriend or girlfriend when even one screen is too much: 20 questions about a memory only the two of you share, two truths and a lie about your day, and the story you build one sentence each. Nobody needs to name these; they survive any connection because they survive silence. They’re the reason the decks above exist, and the deck is only there for when you can’t think of the next one.
Something for the background
Spotify Jam: best for not playing anything and still doing something together. Since early 2026 a Jam can be started remotely from a Spotify message, so you share one queue while you talk, each adding songs and skipping each other’s. For a remote Jam you both need Premium; a free account can only join in person. If that rules it out, our guide to how to listen to music together long distance has the free options. It turns a call with nothing left to say into a call with a soundtrack, which is sometimes all it needed.
When the call ends before the game does
melt: ours, and the one on this list that doesn’t need the call at all. You answer twelve questions privately on your phone, send one link, your partner answers whenever they’re awake, and only the things you both said yes to are revealed. We built it for the conversation that’s hard to start out loud, which on a long-distance call is most of them. Free, no download, and the matches are a good list for the next visit.
What needs more than a phone call
Skribbl.io, Gartic Phone and the Jackbox packs all need a screen you can both see, so they live in our browser games list rather than here. Anything that needs your faces, from charades to “guess what I’m holding,” is in our FaceTime games for couples. And the turn-based apps you keep running between calls, chess and word games and the rest, are in our mobile games for long distance couples. A voice call is the smallest channel you have, and the games above are the ones that fit in it. Give the next call one of them before the silence, not after; it’s one of the easier ways of keeping a long distance relationship strong. Then let the game run out and see what the two of you say next.
Try melt with your partner

Frequently asked questions
What games can couples play over the phone long distance?+
Games where the talking is the mechanic. Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes was built for it: one of you sees the bomb on a phone, the other reads a free online manual. Wavelength and Codenames Duet run on spoken clues, Enchambered's Alone Together and Templio give you two different screens to describe to each other, and Lovebae or a free long-distance questions deck give you cards to read aloud.
What are some games to play on a call with your boyfriend or girlfriend with no screen?+
20 questions about a memory only you two share, two truths and a lie about your day, and a story you build one sentence at a time need nothing to open and survive any connection. When you run out, one of you reads from a deck: Lovebae's truth or dare and never have I ever are free and written for couples apart, and our long distance questions generator works on one phone.
Which phone games for long distance couples work on a bad connection?+
Anything turn-based or untimed. Wavelength, Codenames Duet and Templio have no clock, so a dropped line costs you a minute, not the game. Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes is timed but is one person reading slowly while the other listens, which copes well. Real-time drawing games and anything that syncs two screens are the ones that fall apart.
Can you play Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes over the phone?+
Yes, and it is the classic way to play it apart. Only the defuser needs the game open; the expert reads the Bomb Defusal Manual, which is a free website, and must not see the bomb. Talk over any call, describe what you see, and follow the manual together. The app is paid on iOS and Android; the manual costs nothing.
What can long distance couples do on a call when they run out of things to say?+
Pick one game before the silence rather than after it. A spoken-clue game like Wavelength takes ten minutes, a deck of questions read aloud fills a whole call, and a shared Spotify Jam gives the call a soundtrack while you talk. If the call ends first, melt lets you each answer twelve questions privately and reveals only what you both said yes to, no call required.
